Year 5 Class Letter Spring 2020

Year 5 Topic Spring 2020

Welcome back after what we hope was a joyful and restful Christmas break.

This term our learning will in many ways revolve around our two main topics: Earth and Space in Science; and Trade and Settlement (which is a Geography themed topic).

Our Earth and Space learning will be cross-curricular, as much of our English work will relate to the 'Space Race' between the U.S.A and U.S.S.R during the 1950's and 1960's. This allows us to explore that fascinating historical period and offers fantastic opportunities for Art and D.T lessons. This topic will be further enhanced by an exciting class trip to the world-famous Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre in Macclesfield.

Other exciting plans for this term include an outdoor activity day in local woodland; an afternoon at Holmfirth High School to watch their hilarious new production of School of Rock; two days of 'Bikeability' training, with children learning how to cycle safely on the road; and two half days of Pedestrian Safety training to help ensure pupils know how to stay safe when crossing roads.

All in all, it's shaping up to be 'out of this world'!!!!

Well, the Summer holidays are over and we move forward into yet another exciting academic year in Year 5. Allow me to extend a warm welcome to our pupils and their families. I am looking forward to meeting you all over the coming weeks and working together closely to enable your children to reach their full potential and enjoy a fun and stimulating year.

My name is Mr Keane and I will be supported in Year 5 by Mrs Horne.

This term our topic is Ancient Egypt and we will be learning about many aspects of Egyptian civilisation. Our learning will be complimented by a trip to Leeds City Museum in the second half of this term, where we will enjoy looking at the artefacts and experience a workshop. In class, we will even be mummifying tomatoes! Freaky, huh?

Much of our learning will stem from our topic theme, particularly history, geography, art, music and English. Grammar learning will tie in with our whole class text where possible.

Homework is set weekly on Fridays. It is due back by the following Wednesday.

Children are also expected to read for 15 minutes and practise times tables for 15 minutes every evening.

Homework should take no more than 1 hour in total. Please support your child with the completion of homework where necessary. Homework tasks are designed to compliment and reinforce learning which has taken place in class and is an important tool in helping your child to internalise the curriculum objectives.

Our P.E sessions are Thursday and Friday afternoons. On Friday afternoons we go swimming at Holmfirth Pool. Please ensure your child has the correct kit in school for each session.

Please check back from time to time to find updates and information that will be useful to both pupils and parents.
